Summer Reading 2009: Be Creative @ Your Library!

Be Creative @ Your Library is our summer reading theme.  Summer Reading Club (SRC) for children, teens and adults, sponsored by Friends of the Library, runs June 1 – July 31.

Sign-ups start Monday, June 1. 

Key dates this summer

Monday, June 1

Kick-off event - 5:00-7:30 p.m.

"Be a Mime" with Joli -6:30-7:15 p.m. (Registration required)

Tuesdays in June and July (beginning June 9)

Drop in any time between 5:30-7:30 p.m.

Target Artists Showcase

                                   Saturday, August 1, 2-3 p.m.

KIDS may set their own reading goals with a parent’s or other adult sponsor’s help. When the goal is met, kids may receive one of a limited supply of our cool, free SRC-themed t-shirts, a free book, an Applebee's Free Dessert Shooter Books Are A Blast certificate, a free child's ice cream cone coupon from Chippy's Ice Cream Parlor, and an Endangered Species Chocolate Smooth Milk Chocolate Bar!  Other prizes (limited supply) include Tickets to the Children's Museum of Indianapolis Tomb of Doom Haunted House, Bob Evans certificates and Red Robin certificates.

The first day to pick up prizes is June 22.  The last day to pick up prizes is August 9.

Wear your t-shirt to the Ice Cream Social on Saturday, August 1 and get FREE ice cream between 2-3 p.m.  There should be plenty of t-shirts and ice cream, but supplies are limited.

The kids' registration giveaway is a Chick-fil-A bookmark (coupon) and a magic paint sheet!

TEENS, for each book read, will earn an entry in a drawing for a great Asus Eee PC notebook computer! Upon reaching their reading goal, teens will receive a free SRC-themed t-shirt and an Endangered Species Chocolate Smooth Milk Chocolate Bar! 

The first day to pick up prizes is June 22.  The last day to pick up prizes is August 9.

ADULTS will earn a drawing entry for each book they read.  The adult drawing grand prize is a year's family membership to the Plainfield Recreation Center, donated by the Town of Plainfield. We'll also draw for weekly t-shirt giveaways and Endangered Species Chocolate Smooth Milk Chocolate Bars!

Adults who register for SRC will be eligible to receive a free Endangered Species Chocolate Smooth Milk Chocolate Bar during the SRC wrap-up event (Ice Cream Social) from 2-3 p.m., Saturday, August 1.

At the Ice Cream Social, adults will also be able to purchase ice cream to enjoy!

It's Our Super SRC Kick-off: Monday, June 1, 5:00-7:30 p.m.

Be amused and amazed at the SRC kick-off program, “Be a Mime,” with Joli on Monday, June 1 from 6:30-7:15 p.m.  Registration is required - visit our Events Calendar.

Other activities on the library's front porch (or nearby) between 5:00 - 7:30 that evening include a glass-blowing demonstration by Lisa Pelo-McNiece, art activities (mandalas, rubber stamping, crayon rubbings), balloon sculptures and awesome face painting! 

You'll be able to sign up for Summer Reading Club - and there will be other surprises!

Target ® Artists Showcase

The entire family can drop in to see artists at work at the Target ® Artists Showcase each Tuesday, June 9 to July 28, between 5:30 and 7:30 p.m.

SRC Programs for Kids!

Kids’ programs include a “Pollock Paint Out,” the five-part “Mixed Media Club” series, and a theater series, “Happenings on Stage.”  There’s also a two-part series, “Fancy Nancy: Games Galore!” 

Tween programs such as basket making, cartooning and Fox Box Ball are scheduled – plus two book discussions called “Tween the Lines.”

SRC Programs for Teens!

Check out our incredibly artistic teen programs!  “Be Creative Fridays” topics include “Flip!” (decorating flip flops), “Altered Books,” “Teen Tote,” “Tie Dye Socks,” “Chop Stick Knitting,” and “Giant Pick Up Sticks.” 

There’s a three-evening teen Theater Workshop in late July. Throughout the summer, Online Gaming is in the Computer Center on Mondays and “Game On” sessions (with snacks!) are on Tuesdays.  Get details and register on our Events Calendar.

SRC Programs for Adults!

Our creative summer programs for adults include a three-part series, “Cool Flicks for a Hot Summer Night: Gene Stratton-Porter Filmfest” and “Staging Your Home for a Quick, Profitable Sale.” 

A two-part “Get Creative” series presents programs by painter Ellie Siskind, a former Plainfield resident, and by the popular Indy musical trio, Tonos Triad.  The young musicians of Tonos Triad wrote the all the songs on their recently-released full length CD!

SRC Wrap-up: Ice Cream Social: Saturday, August 1, 2-3 p.m.

Our ice cream social wrap-up, sponsored and hosted by Friends of the Library, will be Saturday, August 1.  There will be free ice cream for kids and teens who wear their SRC

t-shirts!  Ice cream will also be available for purchase.
