David "The Tie Guy" and His Ties Featured at the Library

From January through March 2010, David's ties were featured in the large display case at the library.  He was also featured in the local newspaper, the Hendricks County Flyer, as well as a tie vendor website, Wildties.com.  The display was designed by Donna Bissonnette and featured a caricature of David drawn by Laura Appleby.  Below is the story that was featured on the front page of the library's website.

You all know David "The Tie Guy" from the front circulation desk... in fact, many of you come in just to visit with always-friendly David and to check out what unique tie he is wearing for the day. David owns and proudly wears over 80 ties, about half of which are currently on display in the large display case across from David's usual post at the checkout desk.

David The Tie Guy

David has a hard time choosing his favorite tie, but says his favorite is probably his duct tape tie. From themes like breast cancer awareness and various holidays to an appropriately shaped Spongebob Squarepants and a classic Peanuts tie, David has a tie for just about an occasion. Come see David and his ties at the library this month! Take a look, pick your favorite, and while you're at it let David know which tie you prefer!

David was featured on the front page of the Wednesday, January 27 edition of the Hendricks County Flyer newspaper.  Check out his interview in the paper (the library has copies of the newspaper) or online.  David is also featured on his favorite tie vendor website, Wildties.com, in the media section.

 Quaker Day Parade

Did you see the library in the Quaker Day Parade?  Volunteers and staff members dressed up as storybook characters, such as the Man in the Yellow Hat from Curious George, the Wicked Witch of the West from the Wizard of Oz, Luna Lovegood from Harry Potter, and Fancy Nancy from Fancy Nancy.  Several Teen Library Advisory Board (TLAB) members dressed up and passed out candy to children.  Look for us next year in the 2010 Quaker Day Parade!

New Hours

The library's new, expanded hours are -

Monday through Thursday: 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Friday: 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Saturday: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Sunday: 1 to 5 p.m. (year-round)

Adding weekday hours and opening on Sundays during the summer will increase customers’ access to the library.  It’s just one of the changes resulting from our library’s Strategic Plan, adopted by the Library Board at its November 18 meeting.  The entire strategic plan may be reviewed on the P-GTPL website.

The planning team included ten library staff members and two library trustees.  Earlier this year, consultant Bob Smith of Medina, OH interviewed community members and conducted focus groups to gather input for the plan.  Smith led the 12-member team through the planning process, resulting in a new vision for the library as the destination for learning, discovery, culture and enjoyment for all.  The library’s new mission is to serve as an inviting place connecting the community with opportunities for personal enrichment and enjoyment.

Evergreen Indiana Goes Live @ P-GTPL!

PLAINFIELD,  IN – October 13, 2008: The Plainfield-Guilford Township Public Library, Mooresville Public Library, Lebanon Public Library, Jackson County Public Library and Colfax-Perry Township Public Library today all went live with Evergreen, an integrated library system (ILS) that holds the records of all of the library patrons, circulation transactions, and collection items. These five libraries are among the first eight Indiana libraries to migrate to Evergreen. A total of 19 Indiana libraries are on track for the initial Evergreen installation taking place now through January 2009.

The Indiana State Library, in coordination with the Hussey-Mayfield Public Library (Zionsville), began investigating in 2007 the development of an open-source ILS program based upon the Georgia Evergreen model. Evergreen was developed using open-source software by the Georgia Public Library Service. What turned the Evergreen Indiana Consortium on to Evergreen was its scalability. At the time, it was unknown whether one, 10, or 100 Indiana libraries would participate in the initiative. However, the nearly seamless conversion of hundreds of Georgia Pines member libraries to Evergreen was a good indication the software was capable of meeting Indiana’s needs.  The enterprise-class automation system helps customers find library materials, and helps staff manage, catalog, and circulate those materials, no matter how large or complex the library.

“The State Library was impressed by the continued growth and development of the Evergreen software itself, and its flexibility to meet the individual needs of the local library,” said Roberta L. Brooker, Indiana State Librarian. “Evergreen was developed by the library community and possesses many user-friendly modules and applications that best suit the needs of libraries.”

The Plainfield-Guilford Township Public Library has a collection of 157,958 items and currently serves 19,437 patrons. The library’s website is www.plainfieldlibrary.net and its new online catalog can be viewed at http://evergreen.lib.in.us.

“We’re very excited to be part of this cooperative endeavor,” said Edra Waterman, Director of the Plainfield-Guilford Township Public Library. “Customers will find it easy to use and will like the features including images of book covers, the ease of requesting items from other libraries not found in our library, and the pre-notification by email before items are due.”

In addition to Evergreen’s many benefits for libraries and their customers, the potential savings for the taxpayer also attracted the Indiana State Library to pursue this as a viable initiative for Indiana libraries. Evergreen Indiana will collectively save Indiana’s 238 public libraries approximately $15 million per year should most of Indiana’s public libraries become involved. Much of the cost for the Evergreen installation and ongoing system maintenance are funded by the State Library through Federal Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) grants.

“The Indiana Library community needs to find viable ways to save tax dollars and this project will not only conserve scarce resources but will also enhance their ability to share resources with one another,” said Roberta L. Brooker, Indiana State Librarian. “Eventually, access to the 24 million items owned by Indiana’s public libraries will be just a click away for patrons of participating public libraries.”

We've Gone Evergreen!

Evergreen Indiana is an open-source integrated library system (ILS).  It helps customers find materials and helps the library manage, catalog, and circulate those materials.

What does Evergreen Indiana mean to me?

  • You may get a new library card. Guilford Township residents will receive a new Evergreen Indiana library card without charge.
  • Fines will be simplified and uniform. Overdue fines will be 25¢ per day on all items at all Evergreen Indiana libraries.  For our customers, this will be an increase for some items (such as books) and a decrease for others (DVDs).

  • The system is intuitive and easy to use. Evergreen ILS was developed by the Georgia Public Library Service and has proven easy for customers to use.  It will be easier than ever to use the catalog to find materials you need.
  • You’ll have more options to borrow materials.  In addition to current reciprocal agreements, you’ll be able to borrow most materials from other Evergreen Indiana libraries.  Nearby libraries which are also among the first Evergreen participants are Mooresville Public Library and Hussey-Mayfield Public Library in Zionsville.  More libraries will join soon!
  • You’ll have useful and fun tools to use. With Evergreen, create a list of books you’ve read or want to read.  If you wish, you may share the list with friends via the library’s catalog.
  • Your library is a leader.  Collaboration equals cost effectiveness. The Plainfield Library is one of the first 8 libraries in Indiana to convert to Evergreen Indiana.      Costs for our Evergreen installation and system maintenance are funded by the Indiana State Library through the Federal Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA).

Library Receives Trisler Gift

The Plainfield-Guilford Township Public Library has received a generous gift from the estate of Aline K. Trisler.  Part of the funds will be used to purchase additional books for the library’s children’s collection. The gift will also be used to build the library’s endowment, administered by the Hendricks County Community Foundation.

Accepting the gift on behalf of the library, Kevin Neal, library board president, said, “We’re very grateful for Aline K. Trisler’s gift.  Her generosity to her hometown library will benefit local residents, today and in the future.”

The Plainfield-Guilford Township Public library is in its 106th year of service to the community.  More information on the library is available at www.plainfieldlibrary.net or by calling 317.839.6602.

Customer Accounts

At PGTPL, our goal is to have a dynamic, up to date, and appealing collection of materials available to our customers.  Timely return of materials is essential to this effort.   To assist our customers in returning items on time, we send e-mail reminders of upcoming due dates to everyone who requests this service.

If customers do miss a due date, we mail overdue notices, followed by a final bill.  To make it easy for our cardholders to keep accounts current, we accept cash, check, debit or credit card payment for fines and fees.

To recover long overdue items and unpaid fees in excess of $25, the library contracts with Unique Management Collection Agency of Jeffersonville, IN.   Unique Management works exclusively with libraries and has served PGTPL for several years.

For questions or concerns about customer accounts, call us at 839-6602 and press 2 to speak with someone in Circulation Services or e-mail us at askcirculation@plainfieldlibrary.net.
