Back to School Booklist

Going back to school can bring up a lot of emotions for children, whether it’s their first year or their fifth year. They might be nervous, excited, afraid, hopeful – or some combination of feelings.

Books about school can help children understand that their feelings are normal and likely shared by others as well. Plus, reading such books with children might encourage them to open up about their fears, worries, and hopes for the new school year.

Talk with them about what the characters in the book are feeling and ask your child if they have ever felt the same way about school. Discuss how the character deals with their feelings and chat about whether or not those strategies would be helpful for your child.

If your child is excited about school, you could talk about ways that they could help children who are nervous or afraid.

Even silly or unrealistic books about school can turn jitters into giggles as children imagine ridiculous scenarios that probably won’t ever happen, but which would be hilarious if they did.
