Crown Hill Cemetery Tour: Stories in Stone

Crown Hill Cemetery Tour: Stories in Stone

Join us Thursday, July 28 at 6:00pm for a private guided walking tour of Crown Hill Cemetery, the nation’s third-largest cemetery. On this tour, Stories in Stone, we’ll explore some of the interesting examples of both Victorian and contemporary symbolism on the markers and monuments found in the cemetery.  If you’ve ever wondered about symbols–like ferns, weeping willows, stars, anchors, draped flags, lambs, sun disks, angels, and wreaths–then this tour is for you!  Our guide will also contrast these symbols with more contemporary monuments and markers which often feature elaborate engravings, reflecting the person’s life. The tour will conclude with a sunset view of the downtown Indianapolis skyline from James Whitcomb Riley’s tomb high atop beautiful Crown Hill. This tour is 1.5 miles long and walked at a moderate pace. Bottled water, insect repellent and comfy shoes are a must!

Registration is required and limited to age 12 and up.  Participants will need to provide their own transportation to the cemetery. After registration, you will be contacted by July 25 with the parking location and the starting location for the tour.

If you have questions or need help with registration, please call (317) 839-6602 x.2114.
