Get Help Learning Library Technology

Welcome! The Plainfield-Guilford Township Public Library is pleased to offer free digital services to the public. We can assist you with our many library digital resources  such as Libby, Hoopla, Freegal, Kanopy, and more.  We are also able to offer help familiarize you with new electronic devices, operating systems like Windows 10,  software including Microsoft Office and troubleshoot minor software or operating services.

How it works:

We can help with:

  • Learning how to use library eBook and audiobook resources like Libby and Overdrive.
  • Learning about a library databases such as Creativebug, Scholastic, or our Language and Geography databases.
  • Learning how to use streaming services and Downloadable apps like: Hoopla, RBDigital, and Kanopy.
  • How to listen to or download e-books and audiobooks to your Kindle or another type of e-book reader.
  • Setting up a new email address (organizing your email: using labels or folders).
  • Basics of websites: For example: how to upload photos to a WordPress website or explain how a widget or plug-in works.
  • Learning the basics of a Google Suite or Microsoft Office program: like Google Docs, Word, Sheets, Excel, Slides or Powerpoint.
  • Learning about library resume-writing resources, like Cypress Resume
  • Uploading, downloading or transferring pictures.
  • Cropping or snipping images to print (Jing or snipping tool).
  • Internet basics: how to search, how to email a weblink, what is a URL?, what is a captcha?
  • Intro to social media like Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram.
  • Privacy settings for social media like Facebook or Instagram.
  • How to recognize “click bait” or scams.
  • Learning how to use our Indiana Room for genealogy and historical resources.

We cannot help with:

  • Advising or directing you with medical, legal, or financial decisions.
  • Providing technical support for hardware/software setup, data recovery, or virus/malware removal.
  • Typing or proofreading documents.
  • Tutoring or providing academic instruction.
  • Filling out online job applications. We can refer you to resources like Indiana Career Ready or your local WorkOne office.
  • Developing and building a personal or business website. We can suggest helpful tools and self-study resources like gfcglobal.org.

Librarians are here to guide you to resources and provide some instruction, but we cannot do the research or complete the project for you. We do our best to refer you to reliable and helpful sources of information.

Book A Librarian is available by appointment only so that we may provide you with one-on-one, in-depth assistance.  Outside of Book A Librarian appointments or Digital Drop-In sessions, assistance for non-library service technology may be limited. Appointments must be scheduled at least twenty-four hours in advance.

Services: PGTPL staff are trained instructors and familiar with many forms of technology and electronic equipment, but we are not trained computer technicians. We cannot repair damaged or malfunctioning technology.

Antiquated Technology: PGTPL reserves the right to decline assistance with antiquated or unusual technology. For example, we are not able to providing assistance to devices using Windows XP or Windows Vista operating systems.
