Anticipated summer releases

640I am very excited about two novels coming out later this summer. (I am also annoyed that one of the books soon to be released is not The Winds of Winter by George R.R. Martin, but that is for a different post.)

The first novel, The Magician’s Land by Lev Grossman, is the final piece in Grossman’s stellar Magicians trilogy. Both paying homage to and smartly skewering the beloved fantasy stories of The Chronicles of Naria, The Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter and others, the magic-infused world Grossman has constructed and the characters that inhabit it are delightful and complex.

The second book of note coming out this summer is also the third installment in a series.  Anyone familiar with James Howard Kunstler’s 9780802122520non-fiction (and if you’re not, his The Geography of Nowhere and Home from Nowhere are great reads) will recognize the themes of peak oil, human-scaled living and sense-of-place that regularly pop up in his fiction series World Made by Hand. The History of Future (which follows The Witch of Hebron) continues the tale of Union Grove, New York as it’s residents struggle and learn to live in a world without electricity, oil, and other essentials of modern life.

Look for both these books in early August.
