Battle of the Books/YHBA

Battle of the Books/YHBA

Books on bookshelf

Kids are coming in for the Battle of the Books books, which are also the 2019-2020 Intermediate Nominees for the Young Hoosier Book Awards. The nominees include some really wonderful books we hope you’ll love! Kids, we’d love to hear how you like them, and which is your favorite.

The Battle of the Books is an important part of the year at the Plainfield Community Schools. 4th and 5th grade teams from each school participate in the winter. Teams compete with quick answers to questions about the books. The battles are first within the school, and then between schools, until one team wins. We saw kids looking for the books as early as July this year, which is pretty impressive!

To make them handy to find, we gathered the books for Battle of the Books near the entry to the Children’s Room. The library has multiple copies of each title, but they are also in heavy demand. If what you’re looking for is checked out, staff will be happy to borrow a copy for you from the other 100+ libraries sharing materials through the Evergreen Indiana Library Consortium.

Young Hoosier Book Awards

Indiana children vote on the Young Hoosier Book Awards, often through the school library. The Young Hoosier Book Awards program is part of the Indiana Library Federation. Although the Battle of the Books only includes the Intermediate nominees, you may want to check out the nominees for the Picture Book and Middle Grade divisions as well.
