National Library Week (April 7-13)

National Library Week (April 7-13)

It’s National Library Week, starting on Sunday, April 7 and running through Saturday, April 13! This year’s themNational Library Week postere is Libraries = Strong Communities, reminding everyone of all the great things that libraries do in their communities.

Libraries are centers for creativity, expression, and learning. They offer access to the tools, technology, and training essential to the economic and cultural lives of their communities. The Plainfield-Guilford Township Public Library is no exception! We offer lots of programming opportunities for folks to express their creativity, to become tech savvy, to improve literacy skills, and to gain a better, more informed understanding of the world.

The library also is a place for people to participate in their community. We are a voting center during elections, we host community forums, and we offer volunteer opportunities. This year, the library is hosting a Food For Fines program, where overdue fines will be waived in exchange for certain donated items. This important event helps to support local food banks within Guilford Township.

How can you help celebrate National Library Week? Here are some ways the American Library Association encourages everyone to help spread the library love!

Ways to Celebrate

1. Visit your library.

Head to your public library during National Library Week to see what’s new and take part in the celebration.  Libraries across the country are participating, including PGTPL! We’re also hosting a “Why I Love My Library” drawing that week. Simply stop by the display table in front of the circulation desk and fill out a form telling us why you love the library. You can then enter a drawing for a $100 VISA gift card!

2. Share your library story.

Libraries mean so many things to so many people. They provide free access to media, host fascinating programs and events, and strengthen their communities through education and lifelong learning. Celebrate National Library Week by sharing your library story!

Post photos, videos, or text on social media highlighting what you love about your library, whether it’s a way your library brings your community together or a few of your favorite library resources and activities. Share during National Library Week (April 7 – 13) using the hashtag #MyLibraryMyStory on Twitter or Instagram or on the I Love Libraries Facebook page for a chance to win big. One randomly selected participant will receive a $100 VISA gift card from the American Library Association. The promotion begins Sunday, April 7 at noon CT and ends Saturday, April 13 at noon CT.

If you love your library, say it loud and proud. Vocal community support helps libraries secure much-needed funding and reminds hardworking library staff that their efforts are appreciated. Participating in #MyLibraryMyStory is a quick, easy way to help your library thrive! And don’t forget to tag your library!

3. Show your support for libraries on social media.

And don’t forget to follow PGTPL, the American Library Association, and I Love Libraries on social media and join the celebration on social media by using the hashtags #NationalLibraryWeek and #LibrariesTransform.
