10 Jul Board Game & Book Pairings: Bold Life in Water Colors!
The Summer Reading Challenge is wrapping up and the temperatures have been high, so this month we’re looking for color under water. Whether you’re in the mood to play a game, read a book, or watch a documentary, we have an oceanic ecosystem for you!
Board Game: Reef
Designed by Emerson Matsuuchi with art by Chris Quilliams, Reef has beautiful game boards and pieces with vibrant colors and a gorgeous underwater aesthetic. Grow your reef carefully to out-compete your neighbors!
-
- Players: 2-4
- Playing time: 30-45 min
- Age: 8+
- From Boardgamegeek: “In the game Reef, players take on the role of a coral reef, carefully selecting colors and patterns in which to grow and expand. On each turn, players can choose to pick up a new card from a choice of four or play a card that is already in hand. Each card provides two reef pieces and a pattern that scores points if the existing reef has it (after placing the two new pieces). Whoever has the most points when the reef pieces (or card deck) run out wins!
“Reef is an abstract strategy game suited for players aged 8 and up. While it could take thousands of years for a coral reef to grow, a game of Reef should take only 30-45 minutes.” (description via https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/244228/reef)
Book: Ocean Anatomy: The Curious Parts & Pieces Of The World Under The Sea
From the sunlit epipelagic zone to the eternal night of the hadalpelagic trenches, Julia Rothman’s charming art will take you on our tour of our planet’s seas and introduce you to many of the animals who live there. (Note: PGTPL has this title both in print and on Hoopla.)
- From the publisher: “Take a deep dive into the wonders of the sea with Julia Rothman’s bestselling illustrated ocean guide.
- “Follow Rothman’s inquisitive mind and perceptive eye along shorelines, across the open ocean, and below the waves for an artistic exploration of the watery universe. Through her drawings, discover how the world’s oceans formed, why the sea is salty, and the forces behind oceanic phenomena such as rogue waves. Colorful anatomical profiles of sea creatures from crustacean to cetacean, surveys of seafaring vessels and lighthouses, and the impact of plastic and warming water temperatures are just part of this compendium of curiosities that will entertain and educate readers of all ages.” (description via https://www.hachettebookgroup.com/titles/julia-rothman/ocean-anatomy/9781635861600/)
