Community Resource: Community Compass

Our Community Resource feature introduces local organizations and agencies that can be helpful to our community! This blog focuses on Community Compass, an application and virtual platform designed to help families dealing with food insecurity find assistance.

Community Compass was created and is maintained thanks to collaborations between Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield Foundation, the City of Indianapolis, Indy Hunger Network, IU Health, and Indiana Department of Health.

Community Compass offers resources to help families find:

  • Free meals
  • Free groceries
  • WIC retailers
  • WIC clinics
  • SNAP retailers
  • Free events
  • Information on SNAP, WIC, and other programs and eligibility.

There is a free and easy chat service that can help families determine if they are eligible for WIC or SNAP, find places that offer free meals or groceries, and a list of community events.

If English isn’t your first language, assistance is available in:

  • Arabic
  • Burmese
  • Chinese
  • French
  • Hatian Creole
  • Hakha Chin
  • Karen
  • Spanish
  • Swahili
  • Yoruba

How it Works

After finding the area you’re searching around, either with an address or a zip code, you will be shown a map of all resources in the surrounding area. For this example, we selected “Free Groceries”.

There is a list on the right hand side showing the names of the organizations that offer free groceries in this area. If you select any of these organizations, you will be provided with information including phone number and address, hours of operation, and any additional documentation or information required.
