Last Chance Academy: A Study in Secrets

by Debbi Michiko Florence

A twelve-year-old girl named Megumi “Meg” Mizuno, grieving her mother’s death and facing expulsion, enters a mysterious scavenger hunt at her new boarding school to win a trip that could change her life. This book is a fun mystery that’s built around friendship and puzzles to solve. I would recommend it for those who enjoy a good mystery but are willing to wait for the series to continue.

Titan of the Stars

by E.K. Johnston

Celeste, an apprentice engineer proud of her work on the Titan, looks forward to the maiden voyage to Mars, while Dominic feels trapped by his father’s expectations and the loss of his dreams as ancient aliens are inadvertently released on the ship, endangering all aboard. The story wears its inspiration on its sleeves but that doesn’t take away from a fun story with interesting characters. I would recommend this for fans of old school space horror with a dash of character growth.

When Devils Sing

by Xan Kaur

When Dawson Sumter goes missing, leaving only blood behind in room 4, Neera Singh and three other teens uncover dark secrets and a chilling urban legend in their rural Georgia town while searching for him amidst a backdrop of wealth disparity and sinister power. The story takes its time and doesn’t try to rush to the conclusion with four flawed yet understandable protagonists. If you’re a fan of gothic horror, I recommend trying this one out.
