Tips for Reading to Your Baby

Tips for Reading to Your Baby

Recently a patron asked for tips on how to start reading to his baby. What books should he choose? At what age should he start? When should he do it? How long should they read together?

These are excellent questions that many parents and caregivers have but might not always feel comfortable asking. So, here are some answers.

What kinds of books should you read to your baby?

Honestly, any children’s books that you enjoy reading! Favorites from your childhood are great places to start, as are any that look interesting or fun. If you as the caregiver are enjoying reading, your baby will pick up on that and associate reading with safety and connection.

Books with high contrast images (like black and white or bold colors) are ideal for newborns whose eyesight is still developing. As babies get older, books with pictures of real people or animals are excellent, as are books that start to emphasize language development and vocabulary. Examples include books with short, descriptive sentences that explain what is happening in the corresponding pictures.

When they become toddlers, children will start to express interests of their own, so follow their lead! They might be interested in animals, vehicles, or characters they see on TV. As their knowledge grows, choose books with longer sentences and richer vocabulary. Rhythm and rhymes make reading even more engaging and educational.

If you’d like specific recommendations based on your baby’s age and interests, come to the children’s desk and ask. We love to help!

At what age should you start reading to your baby?

As you might have guessed from the suggestions above, you can start literally the day your baby is born! There’s no such thing as too soon to start reading to your baby. Some hospitals or doctor’s offices will even give out books before babies are sent home or at those early baby wellness visits. No need to wait until they seem “ready” by some external measure. They’re learning every minute!

When is the best time to read to your baby?

Whenever! While you may not want to chase them around a park to do so, almost any time is a good time to read to your baby. You can read to them while your baby rolls around during tummy time, or as they sit and play with blocks or trains. If you prefer, you can choose a time when your baby is lower energy or tired, such as before naptime or bedtime when you are encouraging them to be calm and settled. Some materials – like Indestructibles – are even waterproof, so reading can happen during bathtime or water play.

How long should you read to your baby?

Read for as long as your baby seems engaged, but bear in mind that being engaged may not look like them laying or sitting there quietly and paying close attention to the book. As long as they aren’t grabbing the book and throwing it across the room, screaming and crying, or crawling quickly away from you, they are probably engaged! That said, if your baby is showing signs that they are done being read to, respect that and stop before you both get frustrated. Keep reading time an enjoyable bonding experience for you and your baby!
