15 Sep Library Celebrates National Library Card Sign-Up Month
September is National Library Card Sign-Up Month, a time when libraries across the country highlight the vital role they play in lifelong learning, connection, and opportunity. At the Plainfield-Guilford Township Public Library (PGTPL), the message is simple: a library card is one of the most valuable tools you can own.
For generations, libraries have been at the heart of their communities, offering access to books, technology, educational programs, and safe spaces that bring people together. PGTPL is no exception. Whether it’s a toddler at storytime discovering the joy of reading, a student using
online resources for school projects, a job seeker brushing up on digital skills, or a retiree exploring a new hobby, the library provides resources for every stage of life.
“Libraries meet people wherever they are.” said Joanna Sproull, Community Liaison at PGTPL. “We see families celebrating milestones in our meeting rooms, people connecting through book clubs, and teens discovering a new series that reignites their love of reading. The library is here for everyone, at every stage of life.”
In addition to books and research materials, today’s libraries provide internet access, digital collections, business resources, cultural programs, and community partnerships that support Plainfield and Guilford Township residents in countless ways. With one card, residents gain free access to thousands of print and digital titles, streaming services, databases, and more—tools that would otherwise cost families hundreds of dollars each year.
Avid library user Shannon Gaughan-Kelly sees that impact firsthand. “We are grateful to have such an amazing library in Plainfield! The children’s programs have helped foster my son’s love of reading at every stage of his development. We enjoy the vast array of materials like digital resources, movies, games, and the Library of Things to check out. The staff has always gone above and beyond to help us find what we need. We appreciate all they do to help build community through their programing, resources, and exceptional staff!”
For many, a library card is more than access—it’s inspiration. “Ever since I got my first library card, as an elementary school student, I saw it as a ticket to a magical place where I could be transported to different worlds and times,” said longtime patron Ron Prichard. “With access to
books you can explore all kinds of imaginary and creative places—some which did exist, some which might come to pass, and many which can only exist within the imagination of a writer.”
As community needs continue to grow and change, the library remains a place where everyone can learn, connect, and belong. National Library Card Sign-Up Month is the perfect reminderthat a library card is more than a piece of plastic—it’s a key to opportunity. By signing up,
residents are not only investing in themselves, but also in the strength and vitality of the Plainfield community.
