09 Jun Try at Home: DIY Dinosaur Craft
Our Summer Reading theme this year at PGTPL is “Unearth a Story” and we are embracing the dinosaur theme with our programs and crafts! Here is an easy dinosaur craft you can make with your kids at home!
Materials:
- Toilet paper roll or a paper towel roll cut in half
- Construction paper
- Glue (stick or liquid)
- Small googly eyes
- Black marker
Instructions (with pictures!):
Pick a main color of construction paper that you want your dinosaur to be. Measure out a section on the paper long enough to wrap around the toilet paper roll and cut it out. Glue one end to the roll and wrap the paper around it until it’s touching the glued part. Glue the second end to the roll. It will look like this:
Using the rest of that first sheet of construction paper, cut out a head and a tail. Glue a googly eye to the head and draw a mouth with your marker, like this:
Using a different color of construction paper from your first color, cut out 6-10 small triangles for the spikes. Glue 3-4 of them to the head before attaching it to the body. It should look like this:
To attach the head and remaining spikes, fold the bottom of those pieces and glue the folded part to the roll. It should look like this:
Using a third color of construction paper, cut out 6-8 small circles. Glue them to the roll, the neck, and the tail of the dinosaur. It will look like this:
To attach the tail, glue the end of it to the inside of the roll so that it faces outward like this:
Finally, for the feet, cut out 4 small rectangles. Fold one end down and fold the opposite end the other direction. One end will be for attaching the foot to the roll and one will be the foot. You’ll want the foot to be facing outward on the dinosaur. It should look like this:
After adding the feet, your dinosaur is done! We hope you come explore more dinosaur themed programs and crafts at the library this summer! See our complete list of events here and if you’re interested in participating in our Summer Reading Program, click here.
